Review: Svan High Chair

Since our Svan Bouncers were a mad success, when it came time for high chairs I was super excited to get these Svan High Chairs. In my mind there is absolutely nothing on the market that looks better and is more functional.

Lets look at features. It has a tray with a removable plastic cover that is easy to wash. The tray itself comes off so that you can let baby eat right at your dining room table, and best of all the cost is justified when you consider that you can convert this into a kids chair and then an adult chair as your child grows.

Okay, I lied. The BEST thing about this chair is that its not a hideous, oversized, plastic eyesore. I'm a snob and I couldn't see taking up precious real estate in my small apartment dining room with your typical high chair.

The Svan High Chairs are also very easy to put together. I did it myself. Husband not needed. Everything is adjustable from the height of the seat, to the placement of the footrest, to the amount of space between your child and the tray.

Svan gives you the option of purchasing nice soft, colorful cushions to go along with the chair. They make the chair look nice and warm and inviting, and they also function to keep the seat belt in the proper place on the seat. I'm glad I got them, but they get dirty quick if you have super messy eaters like I do. It would be less of a problem if I didn't have to pay for every laundry load I do in my building. Currently, I just use the bottom cushion so that I benefit from the seat belts staying in place, while cutting down on my laundry load. N.co likes to turn around and suck on the back cushion with a mouthful of food. Silly boy.

So, this is a review and not an advertisement for Svan so lets get to the bad stuff. I've been using these chairs for nearly a year now, so I'm a self-proclaimed expert on this thing. Lists are easy, so lets make a list.
  1. Crud gets into the nuts and bolts. It dries, and its gross. The only way to really clean it out is to take the bolt out. I suppose that this is easier than if I had a chair that did not come apart very easily and I had to live with built up crud.
  2. I have manic monkeys. If I don't use the cushions, N.co and A.ro can wiggle out of the seat belt and stand up in the chair. None of my friend's kids stand up in their high chairs. Some of them even have the Anka chair which is similar. My kids have death wishes.
  3. My kids like to hang on the tray of the high chair to demonstrate that they are hungry. I tried teaching them ASL but its not working. They are uncivilized and don't listen. We are working on this. Anyway, hanging on the high chair serves to sort of loosen the bolts and every once in a while I need to re-tighten bolt that connects the seat.
At our family's summer home we have the Fisher Price Space Saver booster seats, and while they get the job done, I love this stylish option that doesn't monopolize any of our existing dining chairs.

Overall, we love our Svan High Chairs and would absolutely re-purchase them.
